With Sheffield Utd and Huddersfield meeting today, we knew we had to get a result against a Wisewood team that has caused us trouble over the past few seasons. The first half, I wouldn’t say we played bad, rather, played a little lethargic. We weren’t pressing how we should, not moving the ball how we should and not taking our chances. A goal proved elusive until Daisy found some space to play a lofted ball into the box, which bounced over the keepers head. Not the best goal but will take them as they come. We made some changes bringing all three substitutes on a re-jigging the girls around The second followed around 10-15 minutes later, as we started to play a lot more football. A well worked move meant the ball was at Izzy’s feet with her back to goal, she saw Amy in some space on the edge of the box, she laid it off, and with a first time effort, curl a brilliant effort right into the top corner. The third then came again through Izzy. Enjoying getting on the ball a lot, she found Nicole out on the left with a through ball, Nicole delivered a great cross which found its way to Brooke who hit a shot which the Wisewood keeper got to, but couldn’t keep out.
HT 3-0 – Not our best half, and the girls admitted it, and were probably a little lucky to be 3-0 up at the break. At half time we moved Olivia to her usual position up top, as she was doing us a favour out on the wing. Also we moved Jodie to centre half, bringing Hannah off, so she could get some experience there as at the time it seemed she may need to play there the following week.
The second half started, and right from the off, the girls looked so much better. A pass found Daisy in space, and without looking played a brilliant ball to Nicole on the left side. Without any options in the box, Nicole tried her luck, and the ball nestled in the top right hand corner. The next 25-30 minutes, the girls looked really sharp, especially Amy in the middle, who was battling for every ball, and setting up some really good moves. Amy set the 5th goal up, after winning the ball, she spotted the run of Olivia and played a magnificent pass, which Olivia coolly finished with one touch past the keeper. Olivia got her second after some good work down the right involving Becs, Izzy released Jas on goal, her shot was parried straight to Olivia who made no mistake from a yard out. Olivia completed her second half hat-trick through all her own work. Jasmine won a ball around the half way line, which went high into the air. Olivia won the header, and chased her own flick on, glided past the Wisewood defence and passed the ball past the Wisewood keeper, a brilliant goal to complete a great hat trick. There was some threats from Wisewood, some of it was through good play themselves, but also a couple of chances were through us experimenting at the back, and some not being as comfortable in their positions, and the odd bit of confusion at the back.
FT 7-0 - A really good strong performance from the girls, with the bonus of keeping a clean sheet, which the defence and Liz do deserve credit as they were brilliant throughout the game. A good performance to take us into the Steel City Derby next week, against a really good SUFC team.
MOM – Olivia Mellor – This could have been a number of people, Izzy, Amy, doing brilliant in midfield, Jess and Jodie in particular at the back impressed, however we’ve gone for Olivia. She didn’t enjoy the best first half she’ll ever play, playing out of position and was frustrated at times and her head went down. However in the second she forgot all that, didn’t let it affect her and got a deserved second half hat trick. A brilliant footballing performance, but also a great show of character from her, well done Livvy!
