With this being the only game being played in the league today, it was important for us to get a win, and try and close the gap on the top 2. In the first half we weren’t at the races for a long time, and we didn’t play the football we are used to for the entire half, instead going looking, looking for more direct passes and long balls. We carved out some great chances, in particular, two one on ones for Daisy, one after some great link up play with Olivia down the left hand side, but unfortunately she put them just a few inches wide. Baring them chances, and couple of more, Bawtry did a great job defending, with quite a deep line, and a very pacey centre half who was cutting out a lot of through balls, and their keeper was in inspired form, making a couple of great saves, and sweeping up anything that came into the box, and with the girls playing more direct she was getting to alot.
HT 0-0 Not the best half from us, but we were still in the game, and had kept Bawtry at bay, they had just defended resolutely, and as I said their keeper had a fantastic half. We told the girls, to get back to playing how we do, keeping the ball down, and being patient.
In the second half, despite what was said at half time, by us and the girls, we seemed to revert again to more direct passes. The brief moments we did put passes together, we did look really good and created some great chances. We had a great chance from a corner, when Jess, who was having a really good game even though she had been played in 3 different positions in the game, put a great ball in but Jodie’s header went just wide. Daisy hit a brilliant volley onto a post, if the nets were like the ones we have on the home pitch, I have no doubt she would have had a hat-trick by the end of the game. We finally got a break through after Olivia came back on the pitch, after hurting her knee earlier in the game. Jiggy was able to get away from a couple of defenders on the left hand side and put in a low cross, which Olivia was able to get to first and poke in at the front post! Finally! Bawtry were then very close to equalising. There striker was released to go one-on-one, however Hannah was able to get back and prevent her getting the shot off, a really good piece of defending! We got a second in the last 5-10 minutes. After a bit of a goal mouth scramble, Katrina, who had put in a really good battling performance, got a goal her performance deserved.
FT 2-0 – A very tough game, where the girls will admit themselves they weren’t at their best, but they got a win never the less, they know they will have to improve next week for the away trip to Huddersfield who currently have a 100% record, but I have no doubt they will all step up. Full credit to Bawtry however who were first to 90% of loose balls, and never gave up all game. Their position in the league is very unwarranted on this performance, and sure a win for them is coming very soon.
MOM – Jessica Elrick – Jess was asked to play in 3 different positions today, two of which she isn’t that comfortable with. However she worked her socks off for the team, scrapped all game, and didn’t stop running, and in a game where it was more about desire and a will to win, she was very valued. In times when she had some time and space she was able to show the quality she has and calm the play down, and deliver some great balls into the box from out wide, and also simply find feet instead of rushing, trying to do what we had asked of them today.
