Sunday 19th Nov 2017 (Match Date)

SHCFA County Cup: 2nd Round:

SWLFC 1st 2 : 6 Barnsley Reserves

Todays Squad:

1. Emily Darwin, 4. Emma Otley, 7. Emily Higgins, 11. Stacey Buxton, 12. Amy Beck,

14. Brooke Marsden, 15. Jasmine hughes, 16. Ali Cutting, 17. Wendy Elwood

18. Paige Lewis, 23. Fay Cassiday

With a list of players unavailble including suspensions, holiday and illness the 1st team took to the pitch against the Barnsley reserves squad with just a bare 11 players. Of those 11 Brooke, Amy and Paige would normally have started on the bench as they were not 100% fit but they took to the pitch to allow us to field a full team. The team were looking to better their performances and run of luck they had had in recent games.

The bad run continued when Barnsley caught the Owls napping and put the ball in the net after just 3 minutes after a good move saw a cross come over from the right side and be put away well for 1-0. Brooke Marsden shot wide on 7 minutes and Emily Higgins had a shot saved just a minute later. It got worse for the Owls when on 12 minutes Fay Cassiday had to leave the pitch clutching her ham string and would take no further part in the game, down to 10 players. Stacey Buxton went close twice before finishing clinically on 26 minutes to get the score back to 1-1. Just 3 minutes later Stacey made in 2-1 to the Owls 10 players. To be fair to Barnsley they scored a further 3 goals prior to half tiem with some quality finishing but our players carrying injuries were passengers by this time.

Half Time: 4-2 Barnsley

Just after half time Brooke could no longer continue and had to leave the field to leave just 9 players. Barnsley scored two further goals on 4 and 9 minutes both again well taken. It was getting increasingly harder for the Owls but they worked hard to stop Barnsley increasing the lead but the game was over as a competition when with 15 minutes remaining Wendy (who had been ill all week) left the pitch with chest pains and unable to continue. The last 15 minutes were played out with just 8 players and a further two that could quite easily have left the field too but the girls to their credit did not want the game abandoning and finished the 90 minutes.

Full Time: 6-2

Managers comments:

Well if we didn't have bad luck we wouldn't have any at the moment. First of all well done to Barnsley Reserves they capitalised on our bad luck but also hit some great goals in the process. We lost Fay after 10 minutes, Brooke on 55 minutes and the it was 11v8 for the last 15 minutes when we lost Wendy too. A big thank you to Paige and Amy who would have never even started the game if we had a full squad and couldn't even run during the 2nd half.  Also thank you to the fit 6 players who grafted to keep the score sensible and only conceded 2 goals in the entire 2nd half despite being heavily outnumbered. Lets hope we have a few players bacjk next week when we travel to Hull to face Malet Lambert.
