MY BIRTHDAY! So I was hoping for a very good day, and a very good performance from the girls, and on Saturday, they delivered. The game started and for around 15-20 minutes there were no great chances and it was very even. No team was in control of the game or had momentum. Then we started to create chances, Amy tackled a United player on the edge of the box, and the ball flew towards the net, hitting the crossbar, and from the rebound Jiggy was just unable to head it goal wards. We then had two crosses roll straight across the front of the United goal which no one got on the end of. We finally got a breakthrough with a scrappy goal from a corner delivered by Daisy and finished by Olivia, a goal I’m sure she thoroughly enjoyed. Daisy then turned into the goal scorer after good work following a throw in meant she was through 1-on-1 with the Utd keeper, and fired into the roof of the net to make it 2-0. We thought we had made it 3-0 after Jodie’s pass found Katrina, her shot was parried, and Daisy was on hand to finish, however the referee said she was offside.
HT 2-0 - A brilliant half of football from the girls, we took our chances when they came, and we had defended brilliantly, Becs in particular having a great half. We reminded the girls what happened the last time we were 2-0 up vs Utd, and made sure they knew the job wasn’t done, as we know Utd do have the quality to hurt the team given the time and space.
The second half started and Utd were the better team for the first 10-15 minutes, and seemed to have a lot more of the ball, however our midfield and defence were doing a fantastic job of keeping them far away from our box, limiting them to long shots, through winning headers or second balls.
we seemed to be doing the battling a lot better than Utd, Katrina and Amy really scrapping in the centre of the park for the team, figuratively speaking of course, like they had all game to get hold of the ball, however we replaying the better football at the time. However we finally got a third goal and seemed to kill the game off after some great work down the left from Jiggy and Daisy, a cross came in, which Katrina met to score. From then on, we looked at our best again, closing the ball down quick, and playing some really nice football in places. We then got our fourth of the game, through our most impressive attacking player of the game, Daisy. A great through ball released her 1-on-1 again, and there wasn’t a cooler person on the pitch than Daisy, who simply waited for the Utd keeper to commit, and passed the ball into the back of the net. With us 4-0 up we took our foot off the gas a little and allowed Utd’s striker too much space, she ran through 1-on-1 with Liz, and she took her goal really well, not to different from Daisy’s first, however the girls recovered to finished with a flourish. Daisy put in yet another dangerous corner, and Jiggy just beat the Utd goal keeper to the ball, to head home. In the closing minutes the girls on each team had some differences, but to be fair to the ref, he dealt with the situation really well, and all the girls shook hands before they left the pitch. We also had some kind words from the Utd management team on our performance, which is always nice to hear.
FT 5-1 – Performance of the season from the girls, and a performance which they can take so much confidence from, and a real team performance where they all fought for eachother and came together as one team again like last week. Each and every one of the players contributed brilliantly, the defence had a great game, winning the long balls when we had forced them to go long, and the times they were able to get the ball into feet, midfield battled and won the ball back. Once we got the ball, we put together some great moves, and were able to take our chances really well.
MOM – So tough to pick just one player this week, as we thought all of them were brilliant. There were for us, 3 exceptional performances amongst a team of brilliant ones, and they were Daisy, Katrina and Becs. Probably three of the quietest players we have on the team, however all three did all there talking on the pitch. Becs headed everything that came her way, some I even cringed at, and she fought all game, and she has done all season, and it goes a little under the radar, so she deserves the recognition this week. Katrina battled like a trooper in the middle, really put her body on the line to win the ball and keep the ball for the girls, and got a very deserved goal again today. Daisy was involved in all 5 goals, and I feel now she is settled in the team, and growing in confidence, we are seeing the best of her. Against arguably the two teams in the league we will really be competing with, Huddersfield and Sheffield Utd, she has taken the game to them, and delivered two fantastic performances, and showing all the qualities we know she has. However, today was a day to be proud of all of them, sticking up for eachother and showing this is a team of 16 players all pulling in one direction together! Proud of each and every one of you.
