SWLFC 1st 3 : 4 Harrogate Railway LFC

Todays Squad:

1. Emily Darwin, 4. Emma Otley, 6. Sophie Eyre, 7. Emily Higgins, 10. Channy Rymer, 11. Stacey Buxton,

12. Amy Beck, 15. Jasmine Hughes, 16. Ali Cutting, 17. Wendy Elwood, 18. Paige Lewis, 23. Ellie Sanders.

The first game of the New Year and last minute illness ruled out centre back Sophie Trotter & Fay Cassiday. It was big thanks to Reserve team player Ellie Sanders who stepped in at the last minute to give us a 12 player squad for the game.

The game couldn't have started any better for the Owls when Amy Beck picked the ball up on the halfway line in the 1st minute ran past 3 defenders and hit the ball home for a great solo goal and 1-0. Stacey Buxton could have made it 2-0 on 2 minutes when through on goal and her shot was pushed over the bar by the Harrogate keeper, great save! Stacey had another effort go wide a few minutes later. The Owls had started much the stronger team although Harrogate could have equalisesd in the 7th minute when a cross was met and hit over the bar from close range.

With 17 minutes gone Channy set off on a run in from the left wing but was clipped in the box for a penalty. Up stepped Sophie Eyre who dispatced it for 2-0. With the Owls looking comfortable, a ball given away in midfield saw the Harrogate player take advantage and hit a super shot over Emily Darwin in goal for 2-1. 2 minutes later is was 2-2 when a ball over the top was headed on by our stand in centre back to play the Harrogate striker on-side who ran through and made no mistake slotting the ball past Emily. Emily did have to make a great close range save just before half tiime to keep the scores level with Harrogate finishing the half the stronger.

Half Time: 2-2

There were no complaints at half time, and our lot set off strong again after the restart, Stacey made a great opportunity for herself 3 minutes in and looked certain to score only for the keeper to get in the way of the shot, from the keepers clearance the ball was played long upfield and the Harrogate striker was through on goal but Emily managed to make a save only for the ball to fall to the feet of another Harrogate player who hit home for 2-3.

The game was back and forth with both teams looking to take the advantage. Stacey made amends for the earlier miss when she made it 3-3 on 58 minutes with a well taken shot after a great ball from Channy. Emily Higgins could have made it 4-3 when her header glanced wide of the post and once again on 77 minutes Stacey managed to make another opening for herself with some great footwork only to blaze the ball over the bar. Again the Owls were punished when almost straight after harrogate Hit another ball over our defence and out paced our defence to slot home for 3-4. Our lot huffed and puffed for the last 10 minutes and forced a succession of corners but Harrogate defended well and with a final shot from Channy saved the whistle blew for full time.

Full Time: 3-4

Managers comment:

A great game with two evenly matched teams, I'm gutted for the girls as I thought they deserved at least a draw from the game as did Harrogate's management team. The difference today was that the opposition took their chances when they got them capitalising directly after we had missed great chances at the other end. A big thanks to Ellie sanders who stepped in at the last minute, she played her part in the game and did not look out of place.

No complaints today, sometimes you play well and lose and other tiimes you dont play as well and win, but thats football. Onwards and upwards, Next game is Beighton Swallownest, weather permitting.
