Sunday 28th Oct 2018 (Match Date)

SWLFC 1st 5 : 1 Altofts AFC

1. Emily Darwin, 3. Lucie Spendiff, 4. Emma Otley, 6 Sophie Eyre (Captain)

8. Phoebe Davis, 9. Demi West, 10. Channy Rymer, 11. Rachael Facktor,

12. Jodie Stancill, 14. Jess Morrison. 16. Ruby Bristow. 17. Michelle Stevens.

With all three senior teams in action and a lengthy list of senior section injuries and absentees, the squad contained just 11 players including another call up to the 1st team for Ruby Bristow from our Reserves plus 1st team coach Michelle Stevens added to the team sheet for a possible emergency return between the sticks if required. Regular centre back Sophie Trotter was ruled out with a suspected broken toe on the Sunday morning so watched the game from the bench. Our vistors Altofts AFC arrived with a record of played 5, with 3 victories, 2 draws and yet to be defeated in the league.

The Owls kicked off playing into the low autumn sun and got off to a great start with Altofts at six and sevens and unable to get into the game. The crossbar was hit within the first minute with the rebound being shot wide by Sophie Eyre. Another effort was headed over the bar on 5 minutes and Jess Morrison hit the post with a shot on 6 minutes with the ball frantically cleared by the Altofts defence. Jess shot wide on 9 minutes but eventually hit the net on 13 minutes after Channy Rymer sent her through on goal with her first effort again hitting the post before she followed up and put the ball past the defender and keeper on the line for 1-0.

Altofts had their first attempt on goal in the 14 minute with a shot that was well over the bar. Unbelievably the Owls hit the Altofts crossbar again in the 21st minute after a throw from Demi West before Sophie Eyre made it 2-0 on the half hour mark when her glancing header beat the defence to find its way into the back of the net. Altofts shot wide of goal shortly after and were unlucky to not score. They did however get a goal back on 35 minutes when a corner dropped at the back post and was tapped home for 2-1. On 34 minutes Rachel Facktor hit a shot from the edge of the box with the shot hitting the crossbar for an incredible 5th time in the half. The 2 goal advantage was regained on 41 minutes when Jess picked up a pass from Sophie just in the opposition half and set off with 3 defenders in pursuit, she remaind strong, rode the challenges and slotted the ball past the keeper for 3-1.

Half time: 3-1

A dominant first half for our lot with the opposition limited to three attempts and a couple of corners, it was just a case of making sure Altofts didn't get a goal to get them back in the game. It was game over really just 2 minutes into the half when young Jess Morrison was played through on goal by Jodie Stancill and scored with a cheeky goal lifting the ball over the advancing keeper for 4-1 and a hat trick to celebrate her 17th birthday. Alltofts never stopped trying to get back in the game and did force a few corners with our girls managing the game very well and still fighting to take the game to the opposition. I cant recall any real chances that troubled Emily Darwin in goal for the opposition during the half but Demi had a shot fly over the bar, Jess had a super shot somehow turned over the bar with a super save from the Altofts Keeper and Rachel made it a deserved 5-1 with a far post tap in on 73 minutes after great work from Jodie then Jess.

Full Time: 5-1

Managers comments:

A great all round game from a bare 11 today. Everyone played their part with a well organised defensive performance, some great goals and another hat trick for birthday girl Jess today celebrating her 17th Birthday. We should have been home and dry by half time after a dominant half where the girls hit the woodwork 5 times and scored 3 good goals. The 2nd half was more about game management after letting goals in too easily early in the season. Altofts came here unbeaten so I am chuffed with the performance. Another break next week and then we face Wakefield here at home again on Sunday 11th November.
