Our first game after Christmas, and with the blades already having a game under their belt after Christmas we knew it would be difficult. We were without Brooke who was feeling under the weather, and Izzy wasn’t at 100% after having an illness in the week, he tried her best during the game but it was clear she was still feeling poorly. Utd made it very tough for us in the first 15 minutes, keeping us in our own half, and making Lisa make a few saves. The back line were doing well also dealing with the conditions where they had a strong wind blowing against them, Nicole sweeping a lot up, Jodie and Rachel, dealing well with the Utd wingers, a good start from the defence. After the initial tests from Utd, we were able to get a foothold in the game more, and made the break through from Courtney on 20 minutes, who spotted the Utd keeper slightly out of position and quickly shot from all of 30 yards, which went in the bottom corner. We then got our second 2 minutes later when the ball found its way to Hannah and she finished coolly. We created more chances, in particular one move was fantastic with Lisa passing out to Jodie, who found Jiggy on the left wing, then it went inside to Katrina and her pass was so close to finding Hannah or Olivia who had both made great runs, the ball moved so quick from front to back! We got our 3rd after a good ball form Nicole found Hannah, and Hannah made no mistake when 1 on 1, curling the ball into the far corner. Then a moment we have all been waiting for, Danielle Parker made her return after rupturing her ACL in the very first game of the 17/18 season, and after 15 months out, and a lot of hard work she stepped back onto the pitch, and with her first touched, nutmegged her defender and nearly ran through the defence to go 1 on 1.
HT - 0-3 - A really good first half form the ladies, they soaked a lot of pressure up, but when we got hold of the ball, we had the quality to take our chances when they came.
The second half started, and nearly immediately Danni nearly scored, a perfect through ball found her, but she took her shot very early when she had a little more time than what she thought. She was becoming a big threat to Utd and went through 1 on 1 but a cynical trip stop her getting into the box. She stepped up to take the free kick but unfortunately it didn’t go in. We were creating the chance but unlike the second half, just weren’t taking them. We finally made it 4-0 when Courtney raced onto a through ball from Chloe, who had been at her battling best all game and seems to have forged a good understanding with Katrina, and Courtney won the race with the Utd keeper to jab the ball home. It was a heavy collision between the pair, and they clashed knees causing the Utd keeper to have to leave the game, we send our best to her as she seemed to be really struggling after the game. We got a 5th almost immediately when a pass from the right side found its way to Jiggy who whipped a curving effort right into the top corner, one I don’t think any keeper in the league would have saved. We wrapped the game up in the 83rd minute when Olivia delivered a cross and Daisy somehow got her foot to it and finished very well for her 16th of the season.
FT 0-6 – A greta way to start 2019 off, what turned out to be a comfortable win, could have been far from that if Utd nicked a goal while they were on top early on, but the defence stood up well to it. Once we got a hold of the game there was no looking back, and the girls desire to win was visible for all to see today. Main things to take from today, back with a win, a very deserved clean sheet for Lisa and the defence, and the return of Danni, so a great day all round.
MOM – Chloe and Nicole – a Joint one today! The first 20 minutes were very tough for us, and the defence and Lisa did extremely well to keep us in it, and Nicole was a big part of it, matching their pacey strikers, covering the balls over the top, and even set a goal up later in the game. Once the initial 20 minutes of hard work for the defence was over and we had more of the ball, I thought Chloe really took over. She battled for every ball she could, kept the ball, wasn’t afraid to be a bit scrappy, and played really smart intelligent football. A great performance from them both.
