After a few weeks off due to the weather it was great be back in action with our 1st team hosting Hepworth Utd Ladies at Bawtry road. This was to be the third encounter between the two teams with the Owls winning both previous fixtures, 2-0 in the opening day league cup game and then 3-2 away in the league in a very close game where our lot had to dig deep to get the victory. It was also great to see Emma Otley back in the starting line up for her first game of the season after being out with a serious ankle injury. The Owls kicked off playing into the sun on a pitch that had held up well despite the last weeks floods and torrential rain in South Yorkshire.

It was a scrappy first half hour with neither team taking control of the game and with chances few and far between, Jess Morrison who was to torment the opposition defence all afternoon, had an early shot saved and Channy Rymer also had a 19th minute shot comfortably saved. Our ladies had limited the opposition to just 3 attempts during the first half, two long range free kicks on 3 and 17 minutes and a further long range effort on 19 minutes all comfortably caught by Michelle Stephens in goal.

The girls dominated the last 15 minutes of the half scoring 3 quality goals, first up on 31 minutes, a great team goal which involved Fay Cass in our own half and then Jodie Stancill and Emily Higgins combining down the right before a great cross was caught by Molly Corke who hit home from the edge of the box for her first goal for Wednesday since joining in the summer, 1-0. Just 8 minutes later it was 2-0 when Sophie Eyre played a peach of a ball through for Jess Morrison to out pace the defence, round the keeper (without managing to fall over) and slot home. Jess made it 3-0 just a minute later when great work from Emily in the box, where she won the ball and laid off for Jess to then hit over the keeper giving her no chance.

Half time: 3-0

The half time talk involved words such as patience, complacency and that the game was far from over. It was a well managed first 15 minutes as the visitors came out wanting to get back in the game with the Owls not giving them any opportunituies, Jodie had a shot saved on 56 minutes, Sophie Trotter (our centre back) then picked the ball up well in our own half and set off for goal before beating 3 players and then seeing a chip just fly over the crossbar with the keeper stranded and deserving of a goal. It was however 4-0 and game over when Jodie played a great ball to Jess who hit a stormer of a shot into the top corner again giving the keeper no chance for a well deserved hat trick. The Owls were now in full flow and had two efforts within 2 minutes with Molly shooting over and then thinking she had scored with a header that the keeper did well to keep out. Hepworth managed just 2 attempts on goal in the 2nd half, a shot after a scrambled clearance was hit high and wide and shot that Michelle did well to smother at the near post. Jess capped of a great performance in the 86th minute when she got her 4th and the Owls 5th after a great ball from Channy saw her round the keeper and slot home.

Full Time: 5-0

Managers comments: A great game that we never looked like losing with some cracking goals which all helps with goal difference. Another clean sheet and a super defensive display from Michelle, Sophie, Jess Birtles, Emma and Lucie Spendiff which I believe gives us the least goals conceded count in the division at this early stage. It was also fantastic to see Emma Otley back on the pitch. An all round great team performace, scrappy for the first half an hour but I think we were dominant throughout the remainder of the game. Next week (weather permitting we host Thurcroft at home in the County cup.
