Sheffield Wednesday Ladies fought back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Harwoth Colliery yesterday afternoon.
Travelling to face a side just two points above them in the NERWFL South standings, the Owls produced a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde performance that still saw the visitors pick up something from the tie thanks to goals from Eleanor Vessey and Molly Wilde.
SWLFC started slowly and were made to pay by the hosts as Sophie Thompson knocked in a pair of goals to put Harworth ahead, but Mick Bigley’s side once again showed their resolve to regroup after the break and force the scores back level.
Neither side could find a winner, leaving honours even, though both teams would no doubt have preferred a win from the contest as the battle down near the base of the table continues.
Speaking after the match, manager Mick Bigley said: “I think it’s probably an understatement to say that we struggled in the first half, and we played a long way below what we’re capable of.
“Second half we were able to correct that and the girls played the type of football that we’re trying to get from them.
“Fortunately that meant picking up a point, but we’ll keep pushing for more as we head into next weekend.”
After the tie it was announced that assistant Rik Brownhill would be taking a step back from the senior set up to spend more time with his U9 side. Speaking about the move, Bigley added: “We’ll miss Rik, and I want to thank him for everything he’s done since we moved into the seniors earlier this season.
“He’s a popular guy with the players, with the other staff, his coaching was great and he’s helped us to get to where we are right now.
“So he’ll be missed, but he knows the door is always open and no doubt we’ll see him with us again down the line.”
Elsewhere this weekend, a bare-bones U18 side grabbed a 1-1 draw with Crosspool Green thanks to a goal from Eve Bamford, whilst strikes from Olivia Milbourne, Alexandra Wyborn and Christiana Smith saw the U16s to a 3-0 victory against Kiverton Park.
The U15s went down 3-0 away to Wickersley Blue, but there was success for the U14s as they battled hard to a 1-0 win away to Rotherham United Whitehill.
The U13s suffered a 5-1 loss away to AFC Norton Woodseats, and the U12s shared the points with Sprotbrough and Cusworth, with a 1-1 final score in that one.
In the younger age groups, the U9s enjoyed a 12-0 cup win against Wickersley Blue, and congrats to the U11 Whites against Barnsley, the U11 Blues against Penistone Church and the U10s against Bessacarr, who are all back in league action.
