Sheffield Wednesday Ladies couldn’t convert a half time lead against Harworth Colliery into a win, losing 3-2 yesterday.
On a wet and blustery afternoon in South Yorkshire, the Owls were two goals to the good at the interval after a third strike of the season from Amy Broomhead and a great header from Megan Hammond.
But a brace from Katie McCreadie and a goal from Sophie Thompson would see Harworth move into a lead they’d never relinquish, with Grace Sanderson putting in an excellent performance for the visitors.
It was a tough pill to swallow for the Owls, who looked well placed to pick up points against a team they managed to match for much of the contest.
Defeat leaves SWLFC tenth in the 12 team NERWFL Southern table, with an away tie against fourth place Altofts Ladies scheduled for next Sunday.
Speaking after the match, interim manager Mick Bigley said: “I thought that was a great game, really hard fought, between two even teams.
“I was really impressed by our team spirit, and once again we really did play some quality football. It’s just gutting to be on the wrong end of the score line.”
“We’re getting there, you can see that each week, in games and in training. I can’t ask for more than that.”
Elsewhere this weekend, the U18s played out a 1-1 draw with Maltby Main, taking the young Owls to two wins, two losses and a draw from their opening five games of the new season.
Despite enjoying the lion’s share of possession, Christian Dunn’s side couldn’t convert that advantage into goals against a well-organised outfit.
The U16s lost out to Wisewood, with a 7-3 final score. The Owls were made to rue a slow start to the game and at 6-1 down by the half time whistle, the visitors were in a hole they’d never escape from.
Two quick goals after the restart gave SWLFC a glimmer of hope, but they couldn’t use that momentum to mount what would have been an unlikely comeback.
The U15s also fell to defeat, going down 5-2 at home to Chesterfield in an incident filled affair.
Despite leading 2-1, the Owls finished the game with 10 players and were on the receiving end of two penalty decisions that ultimately swung the contest.
A trio of defeats were rounded off by the U12s, who lost 5-1 against Dronfield Town Black, who are yet to lose this season through four games.
In the younger age groups, well done to our U11 Blues and U10s, who both played away to Handsworth, and our U9s who visited Steel City Wanderers.
