Sheffield Wednesday Ladies came out second best from an exciting home clash with York Railway Institute, losing 7-6.
SWLFC’s Amy Broomhead enjoyed a hattrick to take her to the top of the team’s scoring chart for this season, with Molly Wilde adding two more and Laurie Millington notching her first goal of the campaign.
Leading 2-0 and 3-1, Wednesday couldn’t hold on to their early advantage as both teams went into the half time break with the unlikely score line of 4-4.
York would use a strong second half to seal all three points though on an afternoon where the league’s top scorer Jodie Longstaff bagged a trio of goals along with teammate Tamryn Dunlop, with one more from Chelsea Haskins.
Following the restart, both teams traded strikes to move to 5-5 before the visitors knocked in two in quick succession, hanging on despite a late fight back by the hosts.
Speaking after the match, interim manager Mick Bigley said: “It’s another really tough one for the girls to take, but I think we can be pleased with how we competed against a unit that has played together for a long time.
“The first half of the season is nearly over and we’re really optimistic for the New Year as we keep moving forward, and keep building.”
A positive result for Bradford (Park Avenue) moves them level with 11th place SWLFC on goal difference, though the Owls still have a game in hand, whilst 10th place SUFC Community are just two points further up the standings.
The Seniors have another date with 6th placed Ossett Town next weekend, eager to avenge a 13-0 defeat when the sides last met in late September.
Elsewhere this weekend, the U18s couldn’t complete their fightback against Rotherham United Whitehill Red, losing 2-1.
Trailing 2-0 after the first 45, Dannii Brassington would get on the score sheet to put the Owls back within touching distance. That’s as close as the visitors would come though as an equaliser proved elusive.
Another goal from Mika Russell earned the U16s a point against SUFC Community White as they drew 1-1, whilst the U14s picked up a valuable 2-1 victory away to Dronfield Town.
It was a tough weekend for the U13s as they went down 6-0 against Bessacarr Juniors, and the U12s were second best against Dronfield Town Black, with a 3-1 final score.
In the younger age groups, the U11 Whites paid a visit to Barnsley Women’s FC White, the U11 Blues hosts SUFC Community, and the U9s were at home to Wickersley Youth Red.
Well done to that trio for playing some quality football!
